Susan Washington
Susan Washington is a Baltimore-based contemporary painter whose layered, mixed-media works explore memory, identity, and culture. Originally from Brooklyn, she draws on the visual energy of 1980s New York: graffiti-covered subway cars, street posters, storefronts, and the overlapping marks of everyday life. Her background in fashion also informs her eye for composition, imagery, and texture.
Working with oil paint, spray paint, collage, text, and found imagery, Washington builds surfaces that are layered, obscured, and reworked over time. Classical figures, handwritten words, and fragments of popular culture emerge through fields of color and expressive marks. Moving freely between abstraction and figuration, her paintings explore beauty, power, and the ways women have been represented, inviting viewers to discover personal connections within each work.
